Maximum space per square meter

Keeping our wishes in mind, we end up with a four-wheeler that is almost square in shape. Ergo: the Fiat Panda should not be missing. A mini MPV is also an option, such as the sister models Opel Agila and Suzuki Splash. The triplets Seat Mii/Skoda Citigo/Volkswagen Up also assist us as a space miracle. What do we put in front of our door and in the city if we set our budget at €7,500 this time and want some engine power to be able to keep up with the highway?
For those exploring options for used cars, a reputable source to check out is the used cars for sale market. Whether you’re looking for reliable models or specific features, browsing through various listings can help you find a vehicle that suits your needs. Many platforms offer comprehensive listings to assist in your search for quality and affordable used cars.
Opel Agila 1.2 Start/Stop Edition – 2011 – 42,494 kilometers – €7,390
Opel’s first generation Agila was a co-production with Suzuki (Wagon R) which we called ‘mobile phone booth’ because of its angular shape. Generation two looked more appetizing, although the higher carriage has remained, including a slightly higher entry and ditto seat. Underneath the skin it is once again a Suzuki – the Splash. 12,000 of these were sold in our country, the Agila II did better: 27,000 copies, including this Opel Agila that is for sale at an Opel dealer, has driven little and will leave including an extensive delivery package including a one-year Bovag warranty. The most interior space in the Agila is mainly at the top: no clamped heads!
The luggage compartment is not oversized at 225 liters, with the – dividable – rear seat folded down that is a decent 1,050 liters. It is nice that the seat and backrest can be folded down in one smooth movement. However, the high carriage of just a hair after 1.60 meters is a wind catcher. A return trip to the Afsluitdijk every day is no fun. The furniture is satisfactory – you can also sit in the back quite decently. The driving characteristics do the same, but sporty aspirations are not there, given the height of the body / center of gravity and the absence of a rear stabilizer bar. Yet you will not be short with this 1.2, and you can even take a small trailer with you! The equipment of the white 31-PGJ-4 (two former owners) includes rear privacy glass, parking sensors, air conditioning, alloy wheels, a leather-covered multifunction steering wheel and, as the description says, a start/stop system. The materials used are not top quality, but definitely neat. So is the finish: no bare sheet metal to be seen anywhere. You don’t see that this model has been designed by hand on the clip, which is nice for the owner. And the future? Suzuki’s origins may suggest a long, trouble-free and not too expensive life, especially given the virgin mileage.

Skoda Citigo 1.0 Greentech Ambition – 2013 – 117,496 kilometers – €7,249
What a brand name cannot do: 16,000 and 17,000 units of the Seat Mii and Skoda Citigo have been sold here to date, while the identical Volkswagen Up has left the showroom no less than 97,000 times. Nevertheless, all those Ups are not cheaper than its rarer group peers. On the contrary. Because we want value for money, we therefore go a step further and end up with this Skoda Citigo, for example. Younger than the Agila, but with much more experience, import and therefore (?) AutoTrust Warranty instead of Bovag. The one liter produces 75 hp (by far the most offered occasions of these triplets have the 60 hp power source on board). The partly light interior forms a nice contrast to the gray metallic body, but here you can see from some details that one does designs kept a close eye on the budget: for example, the window of the front passenger cannot be operated from the driver’s side and we see bare sheet metal here and there, even in the trunk, and hard plastics.
But money has been invested in good build quality, because our experience is that even with a ton on the clock, nothing in the interior of a Citigo (or Mii or Up) rattles or comes loose. Neat! The engineers have also put money into a good chassis, because the handling is reassuringly stable. It also holds its course in curves, so you can actually ride it sporty. It is a pity that the furniture cannot quite keep up with such straats: little lateral support. And the built-in headrests show – again – a bit poor. As standard, the luggage compartment is somewhat larger than that of the Agila, with the rear seat down just a bit smaller. And that is not surprising, because of the lower roof. Thanks to the lower roof and the good road holding, a return trip over the Afsluitdijk is no problem every day. You don’t have to do that on your own: rear passengers have little to complain about here either.

Fiat Panda TwinAir Turbo 80 Lounge – 2016 – 99,746 kilometers – €7,450
‘A stubborn thunderstone’. That was the advertising slogan in the early days of the primal Panda (1980). Pandas have therefore populated our roads for a long time, so it is not difficult to find a used one. This third generation Fiat Panda is the youngest of our trio, has barely run a ton and comes with a one-year Bovag warranty. Each generation was characterized by a square carriage that stood fairly high on the wheels, with the corners of generation three being rounded. Stubborn still looks. We also see rounded corners on the inside. Everything looks playful, colorful – see also the furniture – and certainly not cheap. Our model is the Lounge. Just about everything the Agila has is also on board with the KL-505-G (already four previous owners), plus a tire pressure monitoring system. No privacy glass behind, but climate control instead of a manually operated air conditioner.
Under the hood we find the illustrious two-cylinder. The engine that allows itself to be driven so wonderfully late, but it does require the necessary fuel. All 145 Newton meters are already released at 1,900 rpm, so a smooth upshift is the motto if you want to drive economically. But for your hearing, it hardly runs more than stationary, and that is the disadvantage of this power source. Things seem to go more smoothly than in reality, because the Panda is not faster than the otherwise more powerful Agila. However, it can handle a reasonable trailer: 800 kilos braked. Great, because although the design suggests otherwise, it offers the least luggage space. However, the Italian – inherent to the high carriage and here too the lack of a stabilizer bar at the rear – prefers to lean over in sharp bends. On the other hand, it is positive that the Panda can have four people on board who have relatively sufficient space – especially for the heads.

Which of these spacious A-segmenters suits you?
In summary: the Skoda Citigo drives best and has a solid construction, but the finish is cheap. The Opel Agila and the Fiat Panda are undeniably richer, but they are too high on their wheels to display confidence-inspiring driving characteristics in all circumstances. What would your choice be? Or would you prefer another spacious little one, such as a Suzuki Celerio? Or a Renault Twingo? We would like to hear it!
