Impressive electric or modest on fuel?
AutoWeek 46 will arrive in your mailbox this week and will be available in stores from Wednesday. This week we’re going out with the fully electric BMW i7, but we’re also putting two down-to-earth petrol hatchbacks side by side. On the dynamometer we encounter a somewhat forgotten Toyota with a respectable mileage.
At Renault they are convinced of the usefulness of the full hybrid powertrain in the Clio, while the newer Skoda Fabia is not even a mild hybrid yet. Is the newer Fabia already outdated compared to the Clio, or is that not too bad? Marco Gorter sets out with both cars to answer that question, among other things.
BMW i7
The new BMW 7 Series will first be marketed as a fully electric i7. With a considerable amount of technology and luxury, it makes it very difficult for the S-class of arch-rival Mercedes-Benz, among other things. Is this the best car in the world from now on? We could drive it to find out. More electric? Yes, we also drove the Polestar 2 BST Edition 270, a ‘tuned’ Polestar 2 Performance.
Not as new as the BMW i7 but still quite fresh is the Mercedes-Benz GLC. Together with the Audi Q5, it is a step lower in the pecking order than the larger GLE or Q7, but if you see what you can get on such a mid-sized SUV these days, and what it costs, you wouldn’t say that …
In AutoWeek 46 you will also find an interesting story about ‘car casting’. You regularly see cars passing by in films and series and quite a bit of work precedes that. Of course (usually) not just a random car is pulled in front of the lens.
You can of course expect the well-known sections again on the used car pages, with a striking guest this time, especially in ‘Op de Rollenbank’. We put a Toyota Carina E Wagon through its paces. You don’t see those too often anymore! Moreover, Frank ‘t Hart’s copy already has the respectable mileage of 419,000 km when it is allowed on the dynamometer. Let’s see if it’s true that the Japanese of that time held onto their wealth well.
Finally, a Ford Fiesta with a 1.0 EcoBoost enters Klokje Rond. Not necessarily a block that is made for eternal life, but Alexander Hermans’ Fiesta has already covered more than 300,000 km. And then it was also increased from 125 hp to 160 hp and many other ‘modifications’ were made. Let’s see whether judge Joep Schuurman still ascribes a long life to the Fiesta.
