You can use WhatsApp Live to convert photos and videos to gifs

WhatsApp has been supporting the sending of gif files for a week, but now that the app has also had an App Store update, additional options have been added. For example, you can now convert WhatsApp Live Photos and videos to a gif file. In this article, we’ll show you how this works.

Last week we already showed you how to send a WhatsApp gif. WhatsApp has partnered with Tenor to make this possible. This gif database is now searchable from WhatsApp, so you no longer need two apps to send a gif.

Now that WhatsApp has been updated to version 2.16.15, some additional features have been discovered. For example, you can now easily convert a homemade video or Live Photo to a gif, which makes it a lot more accessible for the recipient to view them. The only condition is that the videos should last a maximum of six seconds. The way you convert Live Photos and videos to gifs is largely the same, with a few minor differences. For the sake of convenience, we have therefore explained the two ways step by step in separate lists below.

Convert WhatsApp videos to gifs

  1. Open WhatsApp and the conversation in which you want to send a video;
  2. Tap the plus sign to the left of the text box;
  3. Tap on ‘Photo & Video Library’;
  4. Choose a video shorter than 6 seconds;
  5. Tap the gif button at the top right of the screen;
  6. Tap the blue circle with the white arrow to send the gif.

If you have a longer video you can also send it as a gif by shortening it from WhatsApp. You do this by going through the steps above and manually shortening the video in step four until the gif button appears on the screen. Creating a GIF from a Live Photo is slightly different. Keep in mind that only the iPhone 6S and higher can take Live Photos. However, you can still receive them on any other device.
