Up to 2.5 times more expensive than average insurance premium

Owning a car is not for everyone. You have to deal with high fuel costs, maintenance, insurance, depreciation and road tax. For novice drivers, the cost of car insurance in particular is a financial loss. Young people aged 18 to 20 pay an average of €2,200 per year for their car insurance.
The analysis by Geld.nl shows that young people in the age category 18 to 20 years paid an average of €183.05 per month in premiums for their car insurance in 2022. By way of comparison: drivers paid an average of €74.75 per month for their car insurance last year. If we look at the figures on an annual basis, young people in the 18 to 20 age group pay €2,196 per year for their car insurance. That is almost 2.5 times as much as the €897 that Dutch motorists pay per year for their car insurance.
Naturally, the high insurance premium paid by young people has to do with the surcharge that insurers include in the premium for young drivers. This surcharge is highest for eighteen-year-olds and decreases up to and including the age of 24. This surcharge exists partly because young people have a greater chance of becoming involved in an accident or damage. Naturally, the car to be insured also plays a role in the amount of the premium. Logically, you pay less insurance premium for a 1999 Suzuki Baleno or a Kia Pride than for a Volkswagen Golf GTI or BMW M3.
Insurance premiums will rise by up to 25 percent this year, according to research by Pricewise. In 2022, the average insurance premium decreased compared to 2021, from €80.79 to €74.75. According to Geld.nl, this is partly because the average age of cars in the Netherlands is increasing. An older car usually costs less. In addition, older cars are of course less likely to be insured all-risk. Motorists also drove fewer kilometers in 2022 than a year earlier, according to Geld.nl.
North Holland is the most expensive, Friesland the cheapest
Figures from Geld.nl also show that the average insurance premium is the highest in North Holland. On average, a motorist in North Holland pays €84.77 per month for his car insurance and €56.09 in Friesland. Not Amsterdam, but Rotterdam, with an average car insurance premium of €100, is the most expensive city to insure your car. Groningen is the cheapest large city to insure your car at €66.17 per month.
