Your SIM card may not fit in the iPhone 14 – here’s why

Don’t panic: Apple may be removing the SIM card slot in the iPhone 14. It may be making way for a virtual SIM (e-SIM). You can read why Apple might choose this in this article!

Gurman: ‘iPhone 14 possible without a SIM card’

According to the power-on-newsletter from reliable Apple insider Mark Gurman, Apple discussed the idea of launching the iPhone 14 without a SIM card slot. He says this strategy is part of Apple’s drive for so-called e-SIMs.

The option to put a physical SIM card in your iPhone 14 is therefore in question. However, Gurman reports that it is not certain that this will be announced during Wednesday’s iPhone event. The SIM card slot may not disappear until the iPhone 15.

Why is eSIM important to Apple?

An e-SIM is a virtual SIM card with which users (of an iPhone 14, for example) activate a mobile subscription, without having to insert a small card into the phone. This technology is on the rise, but not yet available worldwide. The Netherlands is one of the countries where e-sim is possible. KPN and T-Mobile, among others, offer subscriptions with e-sim.

The iPhone 13 already offers the option of taking out a subscription via e-SIM. These also support multiple virtual SIM cards. This allows you to easily switch between different mobile subscriptions.

What are the benefits of removing SIM card slot?

But why does Apple want to get rid of this slot? Eliminating the SIM card would improve the iPhone’s water resistance. After all, it’s one less opening. In addition, removing a SIM card slot can also free up space for a larger battery, for example. Finally, an e-sim is extremely useful for the fragility of an iPhone. Because, the fewer parts, the more robust the design becomes.

Apple will announce the iPhone 14 (with or without SIM card) next Wednesday. Other products expected to be shown include an Apple Watch Series 8, a new Apple Watch SE 2022, an Apple Watch Pro and new AirPods Pro 2.
