YouTube for iOS gets official picture-in-picture support

After a long wait, YouTube for iOS gets official picture-in-picture support. When iPhone or iPad users close the YouTube app while watching a video, it will soon continue to play in a small pop-up window.

Official: Picture-in-picture mode for YouTube is coming to all iOS users

YouTube is currently rolling out picture-in-picture support to all YouTube Premium subscribers on iOS. The company says so in a statement MacRumors. The feature will be coming to all US iOS users soon. This is good news, as previous rumors suggested that YouTube would roll out its picture-in-picture support exclusively to paying subscribers.

In the statement, YouTube says: “Picture-in-picture allows you to watch YouTube videos in a small mini player, while doing other things outside the YouTube app at the same time. So your video will continue to play, even if you close the app. YouTube Premium members get picture-in-picture first. We will eventually launch the feature for all US iOS users.”

Also available worldwide for iOS?

It is striking that YouTube explicitly refers to ‘all American users’. A worldwide roll-out of picture-in-picture support is not discussed here. So it remains to be seen to what extent we can also enjoy the new function in the Netherlands.

YouTube users with an iPhone could already use a picture-in-picture mode via Safari. This only worked if the user switched from the smartphone version to the desktop version of YouTube. This workaround is now blocked. So let’s hope official picture-in-picture support will be available to everyone soon.
