Zero Motorcycles Inc. has rolled out a recall for the 2022 SR/F and 2022 SR in the United States. Incorrect bolts may have been used during assembly to secure the brake calipers in the front wheel. However, it concerns only 23 engines, which were assembled between April 22 and April 27, 2022.
On May 11, preparatory work informed quality control about an issue on the assembly line where the front brake caliper bolt could not be properly tightened. It turned out that the wrong bolt had been used, the bolt was 5mm longer and had a coarser pitch. The screw thread in the front fork was damaged when screwing in.
The engine was taken off the line and the front fork was replaced. The bolt to be used was an M10x55x1.25 item number 90-08134, but an M10x60x1.5 item number 90-08142 was used instead. At a glance, the difference in speed is barely noticeable. It turned out that the two bolts were mixed up.
Investigation revealed that the hopper of 90-08134 and hopper of 90-08142 were next to each other in the storage rack. Work preparation removed the remaining stock 90-08142 and moved it to the correct assembly station. To prevent this from happening again in the future, 90-08142 in the warehouse has been moved to a different location.
That same May 11, all engines still on the assembly line were inspected, where a second engine was discovered with the brake calipers secured with the wrong bolts. It was then decided to intensify the investigation.
A warehouse log showed a stock variance dating back to April 28. As a result of quality control, all 65 motors that had been assembled at the VB06 workstation in the period 28 April and 10 May were subsequently assembled. Of the 65 engines, it turned out that an incorrect bolt had been used in one of the front legs.
The recall affects only 23 2022 SR/F and 2022 SR engines manufactured between April 22 and 27, 2022. The last five digits of the VIN number are between 21423 and 21486.
