BMW i4 in detail

We have known since 2019 that there is a BMW i4 in the pipeline. The electric version of the BMW 4-series Gran Coupé can now be seen from all angles, while Munich explains once again how great it will be.

The BMW i4 can also be described as the production version of the Concept i4 from the spring of 2020. However, the name ‘electric BMW 4-series Gran CoupĂ©’ covers the load even better, although it must be said that the regular 4-series Gran CoupĂ© of this generation has yet to be presented.

The BMW i4 will therefore be to the 4 series what the iX3 is to the X3. A car with the same body, but an electric powertrain and some design elements of its own. The iX3 proves that this can deliver a surprisingly good EV. Where that car is still relatively easy, BMW promised earlier that the i4 will be a very fast boy. It is expected that several variants will appear in the long term, but the introduction version could jump from 0 to 100 km / h in about 4 seconds. The main person responsible is one (or two, but probably one) electric motor with 530 hp.

Now BMW adds to those figures that the car should be capable of impressive performance not only in a straight line, but also in bends. Not very surprising, because it would be strange if BMW were to prematurely announce that its electric sports fan is sailing through the corner like a wet mop. Thanks to a very direct steering, a large wheelbase and track, a sophisticated chassis tuning and a low center of gravity, the i4 is just as agile and dynamic as any other BMW, according to the manufacturer.

We would like to experience that ourselves, but for now it is especially nice that BMW is adding a lot of photos to the announcement. The i4 is still dressed in a camouflage cloth, but nevertheless shows itself from all angles. This makes it especially clear how much the car resembles the 4-series Gran CoupĂ©. The differences must therefore be sought in detail. The rear bumper lacks the combination of diffuser and – of course – exhaust tailpipes, although we expect an iX3-like ornament in its place. The biggest question is what BMW is planning with the front bumper. After all, the regular 4-series is notorious for its gigantic grille and it will not be transferred one to one to the i4. The most likely scenario is that BMW will fit a closed, grille-like element within those impressive contours, but because of the cleverly camouflaged nose nothing is certain anymore.

The door handles are also interesting. Where the two-door 4-series make do with the well-known, ‘conventional’ door handles, the five-door models seem to have smoother ones. These door handles we saw earlier on the regular 4-Series Gran CoupĂ© and probably work with an electronic release, via a button hidden under the visible cover. Don’t be fooled by the white door handles on the test cars: these pictures of ordinary ones serve as a distraction.

The i4 is expected to make its appearance this year, probably after the regular 4-series Gran Coupé is presented.
