Bovag: ‘Smart scrapping scheme just interesting’

The crisis means that new car sales are still at a dramatically low point. A scrapping scheme could offer a solution to boost that and to rejuvenate the fleet at the same time. That is advocated by Bovag chairman Han ten Broeke.

Even though the most intense part of the ‘intelligent lockdown’ has been completed, it is certainly not going well with the car dealers. In April, a whopping 53 percent fewer new cars were sold than in the same month last year. It may pick up again this month, but for the time being we are not yet out of the trough. “Some of it is still coming (the blow, ed.). There is some delay. The new sales of cars are actually still complete quiet, “said Bovag chairman Han ten Broeke in conversation with BNR Nieuwsradio.

Ten Broeke therefore believes that there should be an active incentive to boost the sale of new cars. According to him, the EV subsidy is already a nice step, but more is needed. According to him, a ‘smart scrapping scheme’ is an interesting idea: “Something really needs to be done. Sometimes you also have to take advantage of a crisis to bring the future forward. This would be an ideal time for rejuvenation and greening of our fleet.” Ten Broeke emphasizes that Rai Association and ANWB are also interested in this. The European trade associations also called for such action earlier.
