Barbary macaques have powerful jaws and long canine teeth. When the animals open their mouths to scream, it gets loud. But the males never quarrel: towards the end of a conflict, they chatter their teeth. What may sound ominous to a human listener is a forgiving sign among Barbary macaques.

Behavioral researchers are very interested in the social interactions of apes as humans' closest relatives. Parks such as the Affenberg Salem near Lake Constance, where semi-wild Barbary apes live in a natural environment, offer good conditions for their observation.
