Learn to deal with the specific features of the laptop, such as the modified keyboard.

A laptop is a portable, compact computer. All laptops have a display, keyboard and trackpad/touchpad (a type of mouse).

The keyboard of a laptop is often smaller than a separate keyboard. Because of this, sometimes the numeric part on the right is missing. Also, some keys on the keyboard have more than one function. Just look at the function keys F1 to F12, there are small images on them. They indicate what the second function of the key is. Press the key at the same time as the Fn key and the function will be activated. The functions accessible with the Fn key vary by keyboard. But some functions are found on every laptop keyboard: screen brightness, WiFi connection, volume up and down.

Laptops are designed to be carried around. The device is often used in multiple environments. Adjust the screen brightness accordingly. In a bright environment, the screen should be bright and in a dark environment the brightness can be lowered a bit. You can adjust the brightness with the Fn key. Hold down the Fn key and press the largest sun/star under one of the function keys. The smaller sun/star makes the screen darker.

On most laptops, one of the function keys has an image of an antenna or WiFi signal. Pressing this key in combination with the Fn key toggles the wireless network card on or off. If you accidentally pressed this key, the laptop will no longer connect to Wi-Fi. In case of WiFi problems, always check whether the wireless network card is turned on. For example, you can disable the card to save the laptop battery.

Some laptops have a switch that turns your WiFi on and off. If you are not connected to the Internet, the Wi-Fi button may have been accidentally moved and turned off. Turn it back on to use Wi-Fi.

You can use a separate mouse with a laptop, but in principle every laptop has a built-in mouse: a touchpad. This is the rectangle at the bottom of the keyboard. Some laptops have two buttons below the rectangle. These are the left and right mouse buttons. For touchpads that don’t, you have to click on the pad itself. A touchpad is touch sensitive. Swiping your finger over it controls the mouse pointer. This takes some practice in the beginning.
