Honda quickly opens a can of new electric models. We get to see two electric versions of the HR-V and three conceptual newcomers.
Honda is making its plans for electrification more concrete by the year. It is now known that the brand will only supply electrified models in Europe from 2022 and suggests that even the new Honda Civic Type-R will receive a little electrical assistance. From 2040, Honda will only sell fully electric cars. The only EV that Honda currently sells in Europe is the Honda E. So the brand still has a long way to go, but the first new electric models are trickling in China. It announces a small fleet of new electric cars and immediately reports that from 2030 it will only sell electrified cars in China.
Honda has two production-ready electric models: the e:NS1 and the e:NP1. AutoWeek recently showed you the first photos of the production version of the e:NS1. The e-NS1 is an electric version of the Honda HR-V, also known here, that the Dongfeng Honda partnership will sell in China. The e:NP1 shown by Honda is actually exactly the same car, albeit the one that will be run by Honda’s second Chinese joint venture: GAC Honda. It is striking that the e-NS1 from DongFeng Honda is, among other things, decorated with a rear spoiler, which suggests that the 204 hp electric version is. There is also a 182 hp version in the barrel. Information previously surfaced by AutoWeek shows that both versions will have a 68.8 kWh battery. Honda has not yet confirmed these details. It does report that the e:NS1 and e:NP1 will go on sale in China in the spring of next year.
The model names of the first ten electric cars that Honda will introduce in China will all start with and. The ‘N’ in this case stands for New and Next. We already know the e-tje followed by a colon in European Hondas from the models with e:HEV hybrid powertrain. The fact that Honda is dead serious with its Chinese EV plans is apparent from the announcement that both GAC Honda and Dongfeng Honda will have their own factories that will solely produce EVs. The first EV factory should open its gates as early as 2024.
Honda immediately releases the first plates of three electric concept cars, which it will release more information about later. The e:N SUV Concept, e:N GT Concept and e:N Coupé Concept are all strikingly angular electric models whose names already give away what we are dealing with. It is striking that Honda is taking an angular design path for its Chinese EVs, while it has opted for a retro route for the Honda E delivered in Europe and the United States. For the time being, Honda has no new EVs in the barrel for the European market, although they will undoubtedly come later.
