Mercedes-Benz: ‘Six new EVs until 2022’

Mercedes-Benz has a battery of electric EQ models in its development rooms. Das Haus provides insight into which new electric models we can expect up to and including 2022.

Mercedes-Benz puts its electric models under the EQ label. Affalterbach already has the EQC and EQV on the Dutch price lists, but several new types will be added soon. Mercedes-Benz has planned a fully electric alternative to the new S-class in the form of the EQS and two electric crossovers will soon be strengthening the EV offer. Mercedes-Benz has now released which six electric models we can expect up to and including 2022.

EQA and EQB

The ‘smallest’ electrical newcomers are the EQA and the EQB. The former is a fully electric variant of the GLA, while the electric EQB shares its platform and carriage with the GLB. Next year, Mercedes-Benz will start production of the EQA in Rastatt, Germany, and in the Chinese capital Beijing. From next year, the EQB will be produced in Kecskemét, Hungary, in addition to Beijing. The EQA will make its world debut on January 20.

While the EQA and EQB have yet to be revealed, something is already known about their successors. While the upcoming EQA and EQB share their platform with the GLA and GLB respectively, their successors will be based on a modular electric platform specially designed for compact EVs.

EQE and EQS

Mercedes-Benz is also working on a new model series of the EQC and an electric version of the new Citan, but there is more in the pipeline. In the second half of next year, production of the EQE will start in Bremen, an electric alternative to the E-class with its own body and a new modular EV platform. The EQE will be joined by an SUV brother, who is still going through life as an EQE SUV. This electric SUV, which should be seen as the electric equivalent of the GLE, will roll off the production line in Tuscaloosa, USA, together with an SUV version of the upcoming EQS from 2022.

The EQS is the electric alternative of the S-class, which, like the EQE, gets its own body, peppered with design elements from the Vision EQS. This type will soon compete with the new Jaguar XJ and the BMW i7. The EQS will see the light of day in the German Sindelfingen in the first half of 2021.

More Mercedes-related EV news will come in the form of all-new electric models from Smart in 2022. Smart has been half owned by the Chinese Geely since last year and will build its models in China from now on.
