The company that presents itself as a continuation of the original DeLorean Motor Company is not officially a continuation of the well-known manufacturer of the DMC-12. Kat DeLorean, the daughter of DeLorean Motor Company founder John DeLorean, now comes with a new car of her own that is closer to the primordial DeLorean technically. Are we still there?

The DeLorean Motor Company that attracted a lot of attention in the middle of this year by presenting the electric Alpha5 is officially not a direct continuation of the original DeLorean Motor Company responsible for the DMC-12. Although the company does its best to present itself as ‘modern DeLorean’, it is officially called DeLorean Reimagined. In July, DeLorean Reimagined even proposed a series of cars that “could have appeared” had the real DeLorean not gone bust in 1982. DeLorean Reimagined was founded in 1995 as a company where you could have your DMC-12 serviced. Kat DeLorean, the daughter of John DeLorean who was responsible for the primordial DeLorean, disagrees with this turn of events and now builds her own continuation of DeLorean Motor Company: DeLorean Next Generation Motors.

According to DeLorean Next Generation Motors, it even has part of the team behind the DMC-12 in its workforce. In January 2023, DeLorean Next Generation Motors plans to produce its first car in Detroit: the Model-JZD. The abbreviation in that model name stands for the initials of John DeLorean whose full name was John Zachary DeLorean. The first digital drawings of the Model-JZD have already been presented, although we will have to wait for detailed technical specifications until the car is presented in its entirety at the end of this year.

More than the Alpha 5 from DeLorean Reimagined, the Model-JZD from DeLorean Next Generation Motors shares design-technical similarities with the DMC-12. We see LED taillights with LED segments that refer to the taillights of the DMC-12 and above the rear window is a set of louvers. Wing doors are a must on a car that nods to the model that became widely known for its appearance in the Back to the Future movies. Why DeLorean Next Generation isn’t just called DeLorean Motor Company? That has to do with the trademark rights, which unfortunately for Kat DeLorean are in the hands of DeLorean Reimagined.
