The Arlo Go2 is a 100% wireless camera, which makes it especially useful for locations where no power and/or WiFi is available. In this review of the Arlo Go2 you can read whether it is suitable for you.
Arlo has many smart devices, such as the video doorbell and security cameras such as the Ultra 2 XL outdoor security camera. The security camera Go has had an update and is now called Go2. This camera can communicate via WiFi as well as via 4G-LTE and is equipped with a large battery that can be charged via a magnetic connector. A camera that can therefore be placed anywhere, whether or not temporarily, to keep an eye on the environment, such as a campsite, construction site, etc. The device is available in white or less striking black. Arlo Go2
In the box we find the camera, a support for mounting on the wall or ceiling, a battery of up to 13000mAh and a magnetic charging cable with USB-A connector. The camera is larger than we are used to and that is necessary to house the large battery. Internally in the camera we also find a nano slot for a 3G/4GLTE data SIM and a slot for a micro SD card (max. 2 TB) for local storage of the images.
The camera is also suitable for indoor use, but primarily for outdoor use and can be placed on something or secured to something with the supplied base. The foot makes it possible to direct the camera at the object to be monitored. The camera features 1080P FHD recording technology with 2-way audio and IR night vision and a 4-LED spotlight. An 80dB camera alarm siren can be activated automatically or manually.
Installation
Setup is through the Arlo app and is a simple process. Optionally, an SD card and a (KPN or Vodafone) SIM can be added. If a SIM card is present, the initial installation will take place via 3G/4G-LTE. Wi-Fi can then be activated. The SIM card must first be activated in a phone and the PIN deactivated. Any APN information required by the provider can be entered if the initial activation phase is not successful. If a Wi-Fi network is available, it will be used primarily. If that fails, 4G-LTE becomes active as a backup.
Image storage
The SD card can be used as standard for image storage, but without intelligence: that is, limited to live streaming and motion notifications. In addition, two additional forms of subscription-based security are available at a price of €2.99 for one camera or €9.99 per month for multiple cameras. For that you get image storage for 30 days with animated previews, GPS tracking, setting activity zone, interactive notifications and detailed detection of a person, package, vehicle or animal that can also be switched on / off.
Performance
The 130° image looks good: particularly clear during the day and reasonable with infrared in black and white at night. Due to the strong compression, the images allow little enlargement and then lack detail. The spotlight provides extra light when detected and enables color shots at night, but also ensures that the battery runs out faster. The big advantage is that the unwanted guest is put in the spotlight and hopefully takes off. Via 4G-LTE, bandwidth usage is up to a few GB per month, but that depends entirely on how much is detected. The positioning of the camera and the setting of the activity zone are important here. The Go2 works with Alexa, IFTTT and Google Home, NAS support is not available.
Conclusion
This camera has specific added value for a location where WiFi and/or power is not always available. A subscription is required for the additional features.
