This is how far an electric car can go if the battery is ’empty’

Nissan Leaf vs. Kia e Niro vs. Volkswagen ID.3

We can reassure anyone who still has the fear of ending up with an electric car with an empty battery. Test work by Autobest shows that you can often still drive tens of kilometers after the battery has been discharged according to the on-board computer.

Although, on paper, electric cars increasingly have a very usable range, so-called range anxiety – the fear of a limited range – still an obstacle for some. The EcoChallenge held by AutoBest shows that you can often still drive a long way, despite the on-board computer still showing 0% battery capacity.

AutoBest completely discharged the batteries of the 15 most popular electric cars in Europe and then continued to drive. What seems? The tested EVs could still drive between 14 and almost 38 kilometers with a completely empty battery, according to the on-board computer. The energy reserve of the Nissan Leaf with 62 kWh battery turned out to be the largest. The Leaf is still 37.8 kilometers away after the on-board computer indicated 0% battery capacity. The Cupra Born and Volkswagen ID3 came the least with an ’empty battery’ with 14 extra kilometers. The difference between the gross and net capacity can be used, among other things, to compensate for a smaller capacity as a result of degeneration of the battery pack.
