There are daily updates or new versions of apps in the App Store. You have the choice on your iPhone and iPad to update these apps manually or automatically. But where exactly are these options to update the programs hidden and how do they work? That tells iPhoned you.
Update apps on iPhone (and iPad)
It is important to always update the apps as soon as possible. Often errors in the program are fixed or new functions are added.
It is also wise to only download updates (and apps in general) when your iPhone or iPad is connected to a Wi-Fi connection. By default, this is usually also set on your device (see ‘Settings > App Store > Mobile data’). It is then not possible to update apps or download new apps on your iPhone or tablet, until you connect to a wireless network.
Automatically or manually update apps on iPhone
To update apps on your iPhone (or iPad) you have two options. You can set updates to be downloaded automatically, or you have the option to manually download the new versions of the apps (forcing the download). We explain both ways.
Automatically update apps on iPhone or iPad: this is how you set it
When you turn on the automatic downloads for app updates, your iPhone will update the apps itself. You can read how to set that up below.
- On the app, open ‘Settings’;
- Go to ‘App Store’;
- Turn on the slider at ‘App updates’.
You will also see an option to download apps automatically. When you also enable this function, apps that you have installed on other devices are also placed on this device. Handy if, for example, you have both an iPad and an iPhone, and you want to use the same apps on both devices.
Manually download or force app updates: whenever you want
Sometimes it takes a while before your iPhone or iPad downloads the updates itself if you have the automatic update function turned on. And sometimes it’s just faster to update the apps on your iPhone yourself. In addition, when updating manually, you can also immediately check what improvements there are in an app update.
How to manually update apps on your iPhone is quite hidden. That is why we explain exactly how to do this here.
To manually update apps and download updates on your iPhone and iPad:
- Open the ‘App Store’ and tap your profile picture at the top right;
- Place your finger on your name (below ‘Account’) and drag the window down. Do this until the loading icon appears;
- Lift your finger, scroll down and tap Update All;
- Tap ‘Done’, your iPhone or iPad will download all updates in the background.
Under ‘Update all’ you can see the apps that are being updated. Here you can immediately see what has been updated per app. When many updates are ready, it can sometimes take a while before all apps are updated. This depends on the size of the updates and the speed of the internet connection. Do you not see an option ‘Update all’ in step 4 above? Nice! Then all apps on your iPhone or iPad are updated and up-to-date.
