You have multiple options when securing your digital accounts. One of those possibilities is the setting of two -step verification via SMS. With this security enabled you will receive a code via SMS, which you must enter to access your digital account. This ensures that your account is much better protected, provided that the verification codes of your iPhone do not fall into the wrong hands.

That has now gone wrong with a huge number of verification codes. Research by Bloomberg has shown that no fewer than one million SMS codes have been intercepted. These are verification codes sent by large companies such as Google, Meta and Amazon. Several European banks and popular apps such as Tinder, Snapchat, Signal and WhatsApp have also been affected. These verification codes have been sent to iPhones (and other smartphones), but were intercepted by another company in the meantime.

Did you use one of these services in June 2023? Then there is a chance that the verification codes of your iPhone have fallen into the wrong hands. Large companies such as Google and Meta do not send SMS codes directly to users, but use (local) telecom companies to save money. The Bloomberg study showed that these SMS codes were sent by large companies such as Google and Meta via Fink Telecom Services. This company has a past in spying and tracking mobile users.

Fink Telecom Services offers collected data at companies around the world. This means that the verification codes on your iPhone may not be safe, with which the security of your account is no longer in order. In many cases the username and possibly the password are also outdated, so the SMS code offers easy access to your account. It concerns one million verification codes from June 2023, which were sent in more than a hundred countries.

In a response, Fink Telecom Services indicated that it no longer shares data with other companies. Nevertheless, Fink has been more often involved in hacked accounts in recent times, for which a verification code was needed to log in. Meta has already announced that it would no longer work with Fink Telecom Services, it is expected that more companies will follow this example.

Do you want to be sure that the verification codes on your iPhone are safe? Then make sure you install an authentication app. Temporary codes appear in these applications, which are only visible on your iPhone. So they do not come within a provider and are only visible to you. In addition, they disappear every minute, so they cannot be traced.
