1. The design
According to rumors, the iPhone 18 Pro series will largely have the same design as the iPhone 17 Pro models. The rear camera system will look the same as that of the current generation. The screen sizes will probably remain unchanged: 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch. Apple may say goodbye to the two-tone appearance of the back of the iPhone 17 Pro and opt for a more uniform look.
2. A thicker frame
The casing of the iPhone 18 Pro Max will probably be slightly thicker than that of the iPhone 17 Pro Max. This may increase the weight to 243 grams. This would mean that the iPhone 18 Pro Max is about 3 grams heavier than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, the heaviest model that Apple currently produces. It’s not clear why the iPhone 18 Pro Max will be thicker, but a larger battery is the most obvious.
3. Smaller Dynamic Island
Multiple sources wonder whether the iPhone 18 Pro models will introduce under-screen Face ID. Reports remain mixed on when this technology will actually appear. The feature would place the TrueDepth camera system under the screen, making the Dynamic Island redundant.
According to Wayne Ma from The Information, Apple is aiming for a design without Dynamic Island, which will be replaced by a single pinhole camera in the top left corner of the screen. Display analyst Ross Young believes under-display Face ID is possible for the iPhone 18 Pro, but says a smaller Dynamic Island will still be present. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman agrees and reports that the new models will have a smaller Dynamic Island.
4. A20 Pro chip
The iPhone 18 Pro models are likely to run on Apple’s A20 Pro chip. This A20 Pro will have CoWoS (Chip-on-Wafer-on-Substrate), an advanced chip packaging technique. This technique enables tighter integration between the processor, memory and the Neural Engine, potentially improving performance on AI-related tasks. This may indicate an expansion of Apple Intelligence features on future iPhones.
5. C2 modem
Apple plans to include its next-generation C2 modem in the iPhone 18 Pro models, according to supply chain analyst Jeff Pu. The chip succeeds the C1 modem, which made its debut in the cheaper iPhone 16e. The C2 is expected to offer faster speeds and improved energy efficiency.
6. New camera sensor
Samsung is working on a new three-layer stacked image sensor, intended for the iPhone 18 Pro. The sensor improves the camera’s response speed, reduces noise and increases dynamic range. This rumor comes from a source known as ‘Jukanlosreve‘. Sony has long been Apple’s sole supplier of image sensors, so Samsung’s arrival would mark a major change in the iPhone camera supply chain.
7. Variable aperture
Apple is said to be planning to equip next year’s iPhone 18 Pro models with a variable aperture lens. Weibo user Digital Chat Station claims that the main rear camera on both iPhone 18 Pro models will have a variable aperture. It is then possible to physically adjust the opening of the lens, allowing more light in for low-light shots. You can also reduce the opening for brighter scenes and a greater depth of field.
8. 5G via satellite connection
According to a report from The Information Apple plans to add support for satellite-based 5G networks as early as next year. Thanks to this advancement, future iPhones would have full satellite internet connectivity and not just limited emergency features. If this is successful, the first devices with 5G satellite internet are likely to be the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the foldable iPhone.
9. Easier camera controls
Apple is working to simplify the camera button design on the iPhone 18 models to reduce costs. The current camera button on iPhone 17 models uses both capacitive and pressure sensors beneath a sapphire crystal surface. The capacitive layer detects touches, while the pressure sensor recognizes different pressure levels for tapping, pressing and swiping. 10. New colors
