150 million for widening A1 between Apeldoorn and Twello

Asphalt work

Rijkswaterstaat is going to tackle the A1 between Apeldoorn and Twello. The stretch of highway, which still largely consists of two lanes, will be widened. The project is worth approximately €150 million. If everything goes according to plan, the work will be completed in 2025.

The A1 between Apeldoorn and Twello is still a place where traffic often gets stuck. Especially at the Beekbergen junction, where traffic from the A50 connects to the A1 in the evening rush hour, there is often a traffic jam. That problem will be less acute in a few years’ time, because the road is intended to have partly three and partly four lanes in both directions. The Beekbergen junction will also be overhauled and various connections of the road will be tackled. It is not yet clear exactly how this will take shape.

Construction company Heijmans has been awarded the contract by Rijkswaterstaat, which is earmarking €150 million for the widening of the A1 motorway. Heijmans is not unfamiliar with the highway, because the company was also involved in the earlier widening of the A1 between Twello and the Azelo junction. That project was completed last year. According to Heijmans, the same team will be deployed for the widening between Apeldoorn and Twello, so that experience can be benefited from previous experience when carrying out the job.
