Do you use WhatsApp regularly and do you want your conversations to be well protected? Then call in these functions to improve the security of WhatsApp!
WhatsApp security
Do you send messages, photos and videos via WhatsApp on your iPhone daily? In that case it is important that your conversations are well protected. WhatsApp regularly introduces functions that improve the security of the messaging service. You often have to switch this on yourself, because the features are switched off as standard in WhatsApp. Curious about how you better secure all conversations? We put three important functions for you.
1. Set Face ID
The easiest function to improve the security of WhatsApp is to set Face ID (or Touch ID). That way you first have to unlock WhatsApp with Face ID or Touch ID, before you get access to the messaging service. That way you know for sure that nobody will just open and read your conversations. Setting Face ID or Touch ID at WhatsApp is as follows:
- Open ‘WhatsApp’ on your iPhone;
- Go to ‘Settings’;
- Tap ‘privacy’;
- Scroll down and opt for ‘app locking’;
- Turn on the switch ‘requires face ID’.
Earlier iPhones can also be ‘required touch id’ here.
With the function switched on, the protection of WhatsApp has been expanded with Face ID or Touch ID, so you always have to unlock the application. Would you rather not do this? Then it is also possible to secure separate conversations with Face ID or Touch ID. To do this, go to the conversation you want to secure and press the contact information. Turn on the switch ‘Lock chat’ on that, so that the (group) conversation in WhatsApp is better protected.

2. Verification in two steps
A second function to improve the security of WhatsApp is to activate verification in two steps. With this verification you set a PIN code of six digits, which you then always need if you log in again at WhatsApp with your telephone number. This way your account is better protected if your telephone number is logged in on another device. This way you set verification in two steps at WhatsApp:
- Open ‘WhatsApp’ on your iPhone;
- Go to ‘Settings’;
- Tap ‘account’;
- Choose ‘verification in two steps’;
- Tap ‘Switch on’;
- Enter a PIN code of six digits and tap ‘Confirm’;
- Enter the same pin code again and choose ‘Next’.
Verification in two steps improves the security of WhatsApp, especially if someone with your telephone number tries to log in to another device. WhatsApp asks you once every seven days to enter the pin code so that you do not forget it. In addition, set your email address to WhatsApp under ‘Settings> Account> E-mail address’. You will receive a recovery email at that email address if you have forgotten the PIN code. This way you always keep access to your account on WhatsApp.

3. Security reports
The messages you send via WhatsApp are end-to-end encrypted. That means that all personal messages and conversations are private, so no one outside the conversation can read them. WhatsApp itself also has no access to the content of conversations, Meta AI is an exception. Every conversation has a security code, so that you know for sure that the conversations are encrypted. Do you want to get a notification if this code changes? Then switch on this function:
- Open ‘WhatsApp’ on your iPhone;
- Go to ‘Settings’;
- Choose ‘account’;
- Tap ‘security reports’;
- Put the switch behind ‘Give security reports on this phone’.
Have you enabled the function on WhatsApp? In that case you will receive a notification if the security code changes for the telephone of one of your contacts. It is good to keep an eye on that, because a new security code often means that the contact person uses WhatsApp from a new phone. Check that carefully with the contact person, so that you are sure that you are having a conversation with the right person. With this function, WhatsApp keeps the security of encrypted conversations in order.
