30 Years of AutoWeek: This was number 14 in 1990

In this special and yet convivial time it is all the more fun to get some nostalgia. As of today, the brand new Techzle 14 is in stores, but what exactly was in that issue thirty years ago?

News

Breaking news: we catch the successor of the Opel Kadett. We can never imagine the name “Astra”. The first Astra Sedan appears in two vague photos. At the time we call the car the “little Vectra”. What is immediately noticeable in the photos are the new lines and the more sloping front and back compared to the Kadett. It then takes another two years before the Astra Sedan is in showrooms. In the meantime, the fifth generation is driving around and we have said goodbye to the sedan version in our country.

Test

In the double test of Techzle 14 – 1990, the Volkswagen Passat CL 1.6 competes against the Audi 80 1.6. As two corporate brothers, the cars have many of the same features, which made the choice difficult at the time. Our test shows that little has changed over the years: the Passat stood out for its interior space and more favorable price compared to the Audi. However, the Audi won points on “more elegant bodywork” and better equipment. However, the additional cost of the 80 was somewhat disappointing. In addition, we make the first meters in the Mazda Eunos Cosmo. This car started life in 1985 as an MX-03 concept and eventually appeared as the new Japanese coupé with a new “three-disc Wankel engine” and a futuristic interior. Is the car not necessarily known? That can be right, because the Cosmo was officially only available in Japan.

Reports

Bad luck on the way! Although we do not travel abroad for a while, thousands of Dutch people usually end up with roadside problems. In 1990 we knocked on the door of the ANWB Emergency Center to see what holidaymakers might have to deal with. Heartbreaking: the brand new Ford Sierra of the Speranda family with 599 kilometers on the clock ends up in a chain collision in Würzburg. Fortunately, the family comes home unscathed (by train!), The Sierra is total loss.

The construction of the second Coentunnel and the new Wijkertunnel were also on the agenda at the time. All this to prevent traffic jams, but a survey shows that few motorists want to pay for the new tunnels. As Mister De Nooyen: “The government already earns 11 billion a year from motorists, should they have even more now?”

Fiat advertised pages large for the five-door Tipo. “The similarity between the Tipo and a high-voltage pylon”. It may seem a bit far-fetched, but the Italians want to make the customer aware that rust really has no grip on the Tipo. The ad closes with the beautiful quote: “The Fiat Tipo, one chunk of temperament.” Those were great times.
