30 Years of AutoWeek: This was number 17 in 1990

In this special and yet convivial time it is all the more fun to get some nostalgia. As of today, Techzle 17 is in the shops, including the first comparative test between the new Mercedes-Benz GLB and the Peugeot 5008 and Nic takes Czech beer for the Vrijmibo with the endurance test Scala. But what exactly was in Techzle 17 thirty years ago?

News

The biggest news in the week of April 20 in 1990 immediately reaches the cover and the first pages of the magazine. Techzle is big with the new Renault Clio! The French say goodbye to the successful Renault 5 and give their next compact car a new name. The intro says that Renault hopes to make history with the Clio. Thirty years later, it seems to have worked out well. We recently celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of the success song by organizing a small reunion with all generations of Clio. Besides the Clio, there is more news: Lancia is introducing a new intelligent suspension system for the Thema. Much or little loading: it has no effect on the vehicle height.

Test

Number 17 of 1990 contains a lot of tests! In the first test, the Dutch basic version of the new Toyota Starlet is extensively compared to that of Belgium. In the Netherlands, in contrast to Belgium, a modern injection engine proves to be the standard, but in Belgium the Starlet is fitted with a rear fog light and rear seats that fold down in uneven parts. Later in the song, a wonderful test between the Alfa Romeo 33 16V Quadrifoglio Verde and the Volkswagen Golf GTI 16V takes center stage. Feast for the lovers! With successively 132 and 129 hp now almost to laugh about, but for that time quite an achievement. In terms of speed, the Alfa de Golf drives out (203 km / h and a sprint time of 8.4 seconds against 200 km / h and 9.0 seconds), but the Volkswagen appears to be more stable. In the third double test, two Japanese fight against each other: the Toyota Celica 2.0 GTi-16 and the Nissan 200 SX. “Two Japanese for the price of one Porsche”.

Reportage

Due to the amount of tests, there is less room for reports. The famous Ferrari 348 tb knows how to make it to ‘Posterstory’ and we explain that an Audi 80 gets a 1.9-liter diesel from the Volkswagen Passat. It also makes ‘machine car wash’ an appearance. Do you remember: through the car wash for the first time? In 1990, few people still did it and preferred to grab a bucket of soapy water every weekend. A report explains why a car wash does not cost “handful of money” and that manual washing causes scratches faster. The cards seem to have been shuffled very differently thirty years later.

Getting lost was more commonplace in 1990 than it is now, because back then we did it without a navigation system. However, according to Nissan, getting lost is not that bad at all. That is, if, according to the ad, you drive a 4WD car of the brand itself. “Nissan, you keep driving it.”
