In this special and yet convivial time it is all the more fun to get some nostalgia. As of today, Techzle 18 is in the shops including the first comparative test of the new Golf against the Astra and Focus and the first driving test with the new A3 Sportback is central. But what exactly was in Techzle 18 thirty years ago?
News
The biggest news on both ‘Current’ and on the cover is a mysterious Fiat. Unique, because Techzle had the first photos of the new compact Italian three-door. It was headlined that it was the new ‘Micro’, but thirty years later we know better. This is the packed version of the Cinquecento. In 1990, however, it still takes two years before Fiat parks the car in the showroom. Funny: the ‘Micro’ was seen in 1990 as the successor to the 126. Then suddenly thirty years ago is a long time. There is even more news from the Italian corner, because the Croma is available as a more luxurious SX version and Alfa Romeo has started production of the SZ again.
Test
In terms of tests, Techzle 18 offers an extensive range in 1990, again with many Italian cars from different segments. For example, the Fiat Uno 70 i.e. competes against the ‘Yugoslav’ Yugo Sana 1.4 and the test editors park an Alfa Romeo Spider next to a Mazda MX-5. “New Mazda against classic Alfa”. According to the test, the Mazda asks for action and the Alfa urges rest. At the time, they probably did not expect that both cars would almost become family members about 25 years later. The Morgan Plus 4 is shown as a poster story. However, nothing has changed with that car over time, because even now you have to work behind the wheel.
Reportage
In the old Techzle there are many different reports with a very high nostalgia level. For example, white still appears to be the most popular paint color by a long way and an “occasion of three milles appears to be a walking risk”. What should you pay attention to in 1990 when buying a cheaper used car? Perhaps the nicest report is about refueling abroad. Although that is not possible at the moment, it has become the most normal thing in the world this century with (often) the same currency and open borders. Back in 1990, there were many things to look out for. For example, unleaded petrol is not sold everywhere and the question arises as to diesel and LPG. Handy: a striking page with a summary of each fuel per country can be torn out! It seemed only possible in futuristic films that there would be dozens of mobile apps for thirty years.
