5 years: iPhone presentations: what is Apple coming up with?

It’s almost time: Wednesday we see the launch of the iPhone 14. Although the phone is the most important during the Apple presentation, other products often pass by. OMT editor Jeroen Kraak lists them to give you an idea of what to expect this year.

It’s one of the biggest happenings of the year for the real tech enthusiast: the iPhone presentation. Not only is the show always perfectly put together, it gives us a perfect idea of what to expect from Apple’s new flagship. It is actually a kind of anticipation until the moment you have the phone in your hands.

The Apple iPhone presentations of the last 5 years

However, it is not always only the iPhone that is featured in Apple’s keynote. There are also often plenty of other products and services. Of course, we remember the launch of the AirPods in 2016 during the iPhone 7 event. Still, there have been more gadgets’ turn. Jeroen lists the last 5 years.

2017: Let’s meet at our place

The most special thing during the Apple keynote was the telephones, in addition to the introduction of the new headquarters in Cupertino. In addition to the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, Apple also released the iPhone X. Two very different models, so. In addition, we also saw the Apple Watch Series 3 pass by. Something that is now also a regular fixture at the autumn presentation.

Something that doesn’t happen very often is the presentation of a new Apple TV. This presentation was the turn of the Apple TV 4K. As a bonus, there was also the introduction of the Animoji.

2018: Gather round

Let’s face it, the 2018 keynote is one that hasn’t stuck in our memory. This is mainly because the event of 2017 was elaborated upon. Of course there was a new iPhone and new Apple Watch.

There was a presentation of The Elder Scrolls Blades on the iPhone Xs. A spin-off of the famous game series that we never heard from again. There was also room for AR game Galagasomething that also died a quiet death.

2019: By innovation only

As boring as 2018 was, so fun was 2019. The Apple keynote was packed with news. For the first time, there was the Pro version of the iPhone, complete with three cameras. As usual, Apple Watch came next. The company also announced the seventh-generation iPad. This time with a 10.2-inch Retina display.

It got really special after that. Apple first used the keynote to showcase a little more of the services it offers. The first trailer of SEE was shown by Tim Cook. One of the first series of Apple TV+, now in its third and final season. Ann Thai first introduced Apple Arcade. The game service of the iPhone maker where you can play unlimited for a fixed amount per month.

2020: Time flies

iPhone: check (including a mini for the first time), Apple Watch: check. Those two came, of course. Yet the smartwatch got a special brother. For the first time, there was an Apple Watch SE. Actually a slightly pimped-up version of the Watch Series 3. An affordable version for everyone who doesn’t need all the new functions.

Just like the year before, Apple also came out with new iPads. In this case, a cheaper normal version with the A12 chip and a new iPad Air in different pastel colors.

The company also announced a large number of new subscriptions. For example, there was the introduction of Apple Fitness+. A subscription service that offers training and workouts digitally and works ideally with the Apple Watch. Unfortunately, 2 years later, it is still of no use to us in the Netherlands, since the service is not available here.

That’s different with Apple One, an umbrella subscription for different services. If you use Arcade, Music and iCloud, you can save a lot of money with this membership.

2021: California Streaming

Secretly we had hoped for more in 2021 than we got to see. The new AirPods 3 unfortunately came a little later and therefore did not count. However, there was room for a new iPad mini and the regular iPad. Of course, as always, the Apple Watch and the iPhone were also present.

And what is Apple doing now?

As you can see, it is quite difficult to predict exactly what to expect. The iPhone 14 and the Apple Watch Series 8 will come along anyway. The big bonuses are the big question. Let’s hope for surprises as much as 2019.

We’ll see what is really announced next Wednesday. Then Apple holds the presentation called Far out. So we have yet to find out what the name of the event refers to.
