Always wanted to curb 500 horsepower on the rear wheels with your right foot while your crown flutters wildly with the turbulence? Then you can turn to Porsche for the 718 Spyder RS. AutoWeek can already show you the fierce top version without camouflage patches.

Porsche is master in devising new variants of models. With a smooth movement, it pries its crowbar between existing engine versions to squeeze a new one. For the 718 Spyder RS, Porsche can leave its tools at home. That new version is not placed between existing flavors, but is positioned as an absolute top model at an almost lonely height in the 718 range.

Earlier this year, Porsche launched the GT4 RS, a hardcore top version of the dense 718 Cayman. The open 718 Boxster brother of the 718 Cayman also gets such an RS variant. That means that the 718 Boxster will be a real RS for the first time in history.

Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS

The close brother of the 718 Spyder RS: the GT4 RS.

Currently, the 420 hp strong 718 Spyder is the most powerful open 718, but that 420 hp strong variant is relegated to sub-topper with the arrival of the 718 Spyder RS. Just like the closed 718 GT4 RS, the 718 Spyder RS gets the naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine from the 911 GT3, which you can boost up to 9,000 rpm. In the 911 GT3 the six-cylinder delivers 520 hp, in the 718 GT4 RS that power has been reduced to 500 hp. Nothing to worry about, the GT4 RS and soon also the 718 Spyder RS are 80 hp and 20 Nm stronger than the former top models.

The RS treatment is more than just the arrival of a more powerful engine. For example, the 718 Spyder RS, just like the GT4 RS, gets various aerodynamic extras. We were able to show you the 718 Spyder RS before, although it was not yet the final model. On these new spy photos, all the extra spoiler, lip and edge work has been done and the fabric roof has been mounted in its final form. In addition, Porsche naturally mounts modified dampers, springs, stabilizer bars and an extra powerful braking system.

Don’t be surprised if the RS versions act as the latest 718s with combustion engines. The 718 series is being followed by a fully electrically powered model series.
