Taking photos of pets can be a challenge, but with these tips you can capture even the most impatient dogs and cats beautifully.
Take photos of pets
If you have a pet, most of your camera roll probably consists of photos of your beloved cat, dog, or other critter. You’re right! However, it is still quite difficult to take a really good photo of your pet with an iPhone. They move a lot, don’t look into the camera and don’t smile as much as in other people’s photos. With the tips below you will be fine.
1. Stoop or crouch
Perspective is everything. Your pets are low to the ground, so it is nice for the photo if you also bend your knees. Sit on the floor and hold your iPhone directly in front of your pet instead of always photographing the animal from above. It’s even more fun if you hold the iPhone even lower, because it makes your pet look bigger.
2. Play first
Can animals laugh? Not everyone agrees on this, but the fact is that it looks as if a dog laughs when it pants. That’s why it can be worthwhile to first play with your pet and then take a happy snapshot.
3. Let them look at something
People have now been trained to pose and laugh when someone points a camera at them. You can of course also train your pets this way, although it is a lot more difficult. Fortunately, there is a shortcut. If you hold something next to the iPhone that makes your pet happy, it will appear as if it is looking straight at the camera. This could be a ball or other toy, for example, but also a piece of candy.
4. Consider the lighting
Lighting remains an underrated tool for taking good photos. Try to work with daylight as much as possible, because that ensures the best results provided you do not have a professional studio with studio lighting. Therefore, try to go outside for beautiful photos of your pet. With indoor animals, you can try to take photos as close to the window as possible.
5. Use portrait mode
Your iPhone’s portrait mode also works with many pets. If you use this mode, your pet’s head will be sharp and the rest will remain blurry. This makes your pet really the center of the photo.
6. Use Live Photos
If you prefer action photos, it is difficult to capture the perfect moment, but that is not necessary at all with your iPhone. If you tap ‘edit’ on the photo afterwards and then tap the ‘Live’ icon, you can choose another moment that happened just before or just after the moment of the photo. To do this, slide over the bar at the bottom of the screen and choose ‘Set as main photo’.
7. Be patient
A big difference between photographing people and photographing animals is that animals are much less likely to sit still. They don’t understand what you are doing and certainly not what a photo is. So be patient with them. Does not it work? Please try again at another time. Chasing that perfect photo would otherwise become very frustrating. Not only for you, but also for your pet who does not understand what you want from them.

Since iOS 17, your iPhone can recognize pets, so you can sort out all the photos of your dog or cat. Do you have an old iPad lying around? Then you can use it as a photo frame.
