Powers up to almost 700 hp

Volkswagen is working on its own EV powertrains

The Volkswagen Group is further expanding its own development of electric powertrains. In the future, it wants to be able to remove all technology from its own shelves, for everything from city EVs to sports cars.

The Volkswagen Group continues to prepare for a future in which it only sells electric cars. Where the development of fuel engines is scaled down, it will focus more on the ‘in houseproduction of electric powertrains. Volkswagen currently already produces its own electric motors and batteries, but two more essential items are added: inverters and heat management systems.

The goal: reduce costs and make things more efficient. According to Volkswagen, an efficiency improvement of 20 percent is possible. This is partly due to the fact that the individual components can be developed in a more coordinated manner. Volkswagen also says it has a better thermal management concept, whereby everything from battery cooling and heating to the air conditioning in the car is controlled by one ‘thermal module’.

The new powertrains fully developed by Volkswagen should be able to deliver up to 681 hp and we can expect this in the next generation MEB. Then we are talking about MEB+, the further development of the current modular platform for EVs. We can also expect a new generation of batteries for this, as it turned out earlier. This should allow a range of 700 kilometers. These new batteries can also be charged more quickly with charging capacities of 175 to 200 kW.
