A little more details on the web of KTM 890 SMT

The official reveal is scheduled for April 24, but KTM is gradually lifting a corner of the veil on the new 890 SMT, the third model of KTM’s 890 platform after the Duke and Adventure.

A little more details on the web of KTM 890 SMT

After the 890 SMT was spotted during testing at the beginning of last month and the news went viral in no time that the comeback of the popular SMT was imminent, less than three weeks later the official message came from Mattighofen that the SMT is indeed coming back, and much sooner than expected: April 24th to be exact.

The spy photos had already taught us that the 890 SMT is derived from the 890 Adventure, but with suspension and wheels that are purely for the street. Shorter suspension travel, but still longer than, for example, the 890 Duke, and normal 17″ cast wheels instead of the larger wire wheels of the Adventure.

A teaser video from KTM now gives a better idea of what the bike turned out to be, better than the spy black of the prototype that was spotted during testing.

However, there is still a difference between the prototype that was spotted and the clay model and design sketch of the SMT, which appear to have similar low tanks to the Adventure. However, we feel that KTM eventually went for a traditional tank like the prototype that was spotted.

The beating heart of the 890 SMT is the 889cc LC8c parallel twin, which in the Adventure produces a peak power of 105 hp at 8,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 100 Nm at 6,500 rpm. It remains to be seen until it is officially revealed, but we suspect that the figures at the SMT will not be much different. The exhaust system seems to have been carried over from the Adventure, just like the frame, swingarm and butt.

We’ll know more in six weeks, but we won’t be surprised if KTM has put some teasers online before then.
