The BMW 5 series has been with us for over fifty years and as a sedan or station it is impossible to imagine the country’s roads without it. However, the station variant has been around significantly less than the sedan and only made its appearance in 1990. Generation E34 had the scoop, and not only that of the new body style. The third generation was – as a sedan and station – also the first 5-series to get eight-cylinder under its hood. Today we find in our second-hand range a copy that unites both firsts. A purple, of all things!

BMWs with eight cylinders, we’ve been used to that for years. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, however, the V8 within BMW was still only reserved for the 7 and 8 series. Until it was 1992 and the brand chose to hang its 30i and 40i powertrain in the 5-series of the E34 generation as well. For a short time you could recognize 5-series with those motorizations by a grille with two wider kidneys, until BMW made the choice in 1994 to apply the wider grille to all versions of the E34.

The 5-series Touring that we now find in our used car range is one from 1993. That means that it is one with the wider grille that then served as a distinction for the eight-cylinder models. They are not very large cylinders. The 530i has a capacity of 3 liters, the 540i of 4 liters – then the model designations still made sense. At the time, BMW produced 218 hp from the relatively modest content. In the GP-SX-78, that power is sent to the rear wheels via a 5-speed fully automatic transmission from ZF, good for a 0 to 100 time of 9 seconds.

At least; provided the animal is well cared for. In three months this E34 may blow out thirty candles and with a mileage of just under 210,000 it is certainly not new anymore. Still: the owner’s history speaks in its favor and the apparent condition of the car also indicates that it has not been used too carelessly in its life. The license plate history is not entirely unambiguous, but we think we can conclude from it that the car has stayed with the same owner twice for ten years or more. The previous private driver drove it from 2009 to 2021.

Luxury equipment

The car company that offers the car did not bother to tell a story about the occasion, but does indicate that the maintenance booklet is present with the 5-series. What we can see: a purple 5-series Touring with V8 and a completely original interior that shows little wear. The leather upholstery still looks neat and the control buttons are not worn. In addition, the Touring also has the necessary luxury: cruise control, climate control, an on-board computer, heated seats and an original radio; it’s all on.

The exterior is completely finished by the presence of a set of ‘turbine’ wheels from the M5. At sometime? Then shake a small €11,000 out of your piggy bank and type Capelle a / d IJssel in your navigation system, because you don’t find young timers like this much anymore.
