Netherlands less station wagon country?

SUVs and crossovers have been flying around for years. It is therefore not surprising that the second-hand market is also increasingly consisting of such high-legged models. The SUV is also gaining popularity among private individuals who are on the hunt for another second-hand car. That is at the expense of the station wagon. This is evident from figures from the gaspedal.nl sales platform.
According to Gas Pedal.nl, SUVs accounted for only 10 percent of searches in March 2021. This means that SUVs on Gas pedal were even less popular at the time than convertibles, which could count on 15 percent of the searches in the same month, although this could be related to the view of spring and therefore better weather. The cards have now been shuffled differently. According to Gas Pedal.nl, 22 percent of searches are for a used SUV.
The more than doubling of the popularity of SUVs on Gas Pedal.nl is mainly at the expense of the station wagon. Where the station wagon still accounted for 31 percent of searches in March 2021, that percentage is now only 24 percent. Conventional hatchbacks accounted for 18 percent of searches in March this year, down 3 percentage points from two years ago. Convertibles are also less sought after. In March, the hunt for a used convertible was only open in 9 percent of searches.
According to Jasper Verweij, Head of Product at Gas Pedal.nl, the increased share of SUV searches is not only due to changing demand from private individuals. “Almost every car manufacturer has launched small and large SUVs in recent years to supplement or replace their range. Traditional models are making way for an SUV with hybrid or fully electric drive. The question immediately arises whether the popular SUV will disappear again, because it is precisely this body type that is inefficient for electric driving due to its shape and weight.”
Price changes
What could also play a role in the increasing demand for SUVs is the fact that the average asking price of used SUVs increased less (11 percent) between March 2022 and March this year than that of hatchbacks (25 percent), station wagons (17 percent ) and sedans (30 percent).
