Electric hot hatch
Alpine will soon present its own view of the retro Renault 5. We conclude that from a new teaser photo, on which we see familiar contours. It is still a concept version, which listens to the name A290_β, or A290 Beta.
Alpine throws two special photos into the world: one in which we see the silhouette of a car (see photo below) and another photo in which Alpine A290_β is probably written on the back of that car. The silhouette looks familiar to us. Alpine previously showed the electric retro Renault 5 with a sturdy roof spoiler in a teaser photo. It is almost inevitable that we see the same car here. At least, almost the same car.

In the new teaser photo, the roof spoiler looks a bit different and moreover, there seems to be a bit more happening at the front. The earlier teaser may have been a preview of the production version, now it is about the concept version. Alpine describes the A290_β as a show car and beta ‘refers to the beta tests from the software world’. So a beta version, not yet the real thing. The A290 part of the name is also explained. “That follows Alpine’s naming strategy, where it starts with an A, followed by three digits. The tens refer to lifestyle or sports cars and the hundreds to the size of the cars.’ The A290 is therefore, not entirely surprising, a bit bigger than the A110 and ’90’ means that it is a ‘lifestyle car’. However, it could also be a small hint at the power, although Alpine previously released that the hot hatchback 218 hp becomes strong.
Logically, the beta part of the name is dropped from the production version and Alpine’s take on the new R5 simply listens to the name A290. We will probably not know for sure until next year, because then we can expect the new Alpine offspring. Fortunately, we get to see the concept version much earlier, Tuesday evening 9 May to be precise.
