Netflix is working hard to prevent account sharing. Is it really time to stop your Netflix subscription or is it better to adjust it?
Sharing a Netflix account: is (almost) no longer possible
A while ago, Netflix announced that it is no longer allowed to share your account in the Netherlands. Now the first Netflix users will actually see this in a notification.
So do you have a Netflix account that you share with others, or do you use someone else’s account yourself? Then it will soon be over for you too. Anyone who does not live under one roof must pay € 3.99 extra per month. Netflix hopes this will significantly increase its income and that people will stop sharing the subscription.
Cancel or change?
Do not you want that? Then you can cancel or adjust the Netflix subscription. The cheapest subscription for Netflix is € 7.99. Only people at your home are allowed to use your account. With the cheapest plan, you only get one stream (and HD-ready, 720p content).
Do you want to watch with two people at the same time on two different devices? Then you have to take out the Standard subscription for € 11.99. You also get HD content (1080p). The most expensive subscription is the Premium subscription (four streams and 4K) for € 15.99.
Can you no longer share your account and do you have the most expensive subscription? Then you might as well adjust the subscription and switch to the standard subscription. Saves you a few euros extra per month.
All users within the same household can still share the same account. The company keeps secret how Netflix keeps track of who belongs to the same household. Logical, because the company naturally wants to prevent you from circumventing this.
The only thing you miss when ‘downgrading’ is the 4K option (and the four streams). Netflix does not have a cheaper subscription with 4K, and we think that is a great loss. Do you want 4K content but don’t want to pay the expensive Netflix subscription? Then it is better to switch to another service.
Stop Netflix subscription: These are your other options
Have you had enough of Netflix’s plans? Fortunately, other streaming services still let you share your account outside the home, and have a similar offer to Netflix.
For the price of the expensive subscription with Netflix, you can already take Disney Plus and HBO Max. You also get 4K content and four streams (at Disney) and you are not stuck with the limitations of account sharing that you do have with Netflix.
The only thing you’ll miss are the exclusive movies and series from Netflix. But let’s face it, the offer on Netflix has been much less lately. And otherwise you can always take Netflix for a month, quickly watch everything interesting and cancel again.
Oh yeah! Our favorite Netflix alternatives right now are Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, HBO Max, and Apple TV+.
