7 Minibikes for Honda 2023 Wheels & Waves custom build competition

It is gradually becoming a tradition at Honda to launch a custom build competition every year at Wheels & Waves. This includes the 2023 edition, where seven minibikes from seven different European countries compete against each other – each the result of a creative collaboration between a young artist and a renowned custom builder.

In 2022 it was still the Custom CMX500 Rebels, of which Sardinia-based custom builders Motocicli Audaci with Maanboard took credit, while in 2021 Mototrafa’s CB650R Fenix won the race for Portugal.

For 2023 it was all about minibikes. Honda invited seven young artists to work with renowned custom builders to both appeal to a younger generation and create interest in the enjoyment of two-wheelers among new audiences.

With the 125 Dax, Monkey and MSX125 Grom, Honda also had the engines for it. The retro Dax and funky Monkey both share the spirit of the 70s, where the Grom simply makes a statement.

What all three have in common is a total ‘grin’ factor. It’s hard not to smile when you see one, let alone ride one. Otherwise, just read our review of the Monkey from a few years ago and you’ll understand why. Add to that their unintimidating, miniature size and amazing fuel economy, and you’ve got the perfect starter bike – fun, stylish and economical.

Bringing some very creative minds together with some equally talented bike makers and letting their imagination run wild on this trio has produced some very interesting results – the basis for Honda’s presence at Wheels and Waves 2023.
