Fiat 850 (1971) – Into the Wild

Long before the Fiat 600 gave up internationally, the Italians came up with a successor: the 850. That also became a success, although it is a less commonly known classic. Nice to see one again!

Everyone knows the classic Fiat 500 and the slightly larger 600 can also be distinguished by relative laymen. It becomes more difficult with the car that gradually took over from the 600; the Fiat 850. Yet the 850 also deserves a place in the collective memory. Just look at this 850 Special, with its sweet-looking nose, short butt and less than 3.6 meters in total length. A wonderful spot from AutoWeek forum member Afentoe.

We are dealing here with an 850 in its ‘basic form’, namely as a two-door sedan. Not a sedan in the most traditional form, because under the short tailgate you will not find a trunk, but an 843 cc four-cylinder. Do you want to bring luggage? Then you can put that in his nose. In that respect, the 850 was still quite the same as the 600 and 500. Not surprising, because its technical basis was still very similar to that of the 600.

Fiat 850.

As mentioned, this is a Fiat 850 Special, which means that we are dealing with a somewhat sportier equipped 850. For example, it already has disc brakes at the front and the stronger version of the 843 cc, although with its 47 hp it is still a modest turret. It is striking that the car is not registered as a Special and, according to the license plate data, has a 37 hp four-cylinder engine. That suggests it’s not an 850 Special, but an 850 D. Maybe the emblem on the back is a fake.

Anyway: it is a beautiful appearance. It’s an original Dutch 850, so that’s nice too. He just goes through his owners pretty quickly. The current one has had it almost two years to the day now. Incidentally, 850s have appeared in this section before, in many forms. There was already a Fiat 850 D, but also an 850 Sport Spider and even the striking Fiat 850 Sport Coupé. Incidentally, the model was built by Seat, among others. We already encountered the Seat 850 here. If you find a Fiat 850 Familiare somewhere, or an 850 T, we’d love to be recommended!
