Too low level of employment

The adaptation of the infrastructure around VDL Nedcar cannot continue for the time being. At the moment, the company does not meet the employment requirement set as a condition by the province of Limburg.
It was agreed three years ago that the province will reserve tens of millions of euros for the much-needed expansion of the infrastructure around VDL Nedcar in Born, according to parent group VDL. The province of Limburg established a so-called go/no-go moment. Five criteria must be met in order to pay out the money, but it now appears that not all five criteria have been met, according to the province. One of the conditions is that there must be a structural employment level of an average of 6,000 to 6,500 employees, and that is not yet the case. Action groups have been resisting the adjustment of the infrastructure for some time, because according to them hundreds of trees would then be cut down. But that’s not the point now.
According to VDL, the adjustment of the road network, among other things, is necessary to guarantee the continuity of Nedcar. VDL itself wants to contribute almost €12 million to this. VDL says it is investing hundreds of millions in a new production set-up, in which, in addition to building cars, work is also being done on all kinds of other car-related activities. At the moment, however, Nedcar is still in trouble due to the termination of the contract with BMW for the construction of Minis in Born early next year. Employment for most of the now 3,950 employees is uncertain. VDL Nedcar has also signed a letter of intent with an unnamed company for the production of passenger cars from mid-2026, good for a maximum of 3,000 jobs.
