Not a drop?

In the Netherlands you are now allowed to have up to a maximum of 0.5 promille alcohol in your blood in traffic, but if it is up to Veilig Verkeer Nederland, that will be 0.0 promille.
If it is up to Safe Traffic Netherlands, there will be one in the Netherlands zero-tolerancealcohol driving policy. That message The Telegraph. Now advanced drivers are allowed to have a blood alcohol level of up to 0.5, about the equivalent of two beers. The reason for this call from VVN is a study by insurer Univé, which shows that 27 percent of motorists sometimes get behind the wheel with a drink.
According to VVN, it is up to politicians and a total ban can improve road safety. In that case, the chance of getting caught must also increase, VVN knows. For the time being, it seems that a total ban on alcohol will not be an option in The Hague. However, work is being done on a more effective combination of prevention and enforcement.
The Foundation for Scientific Research on Road Safety believes that there are snags to VVN’s proposal. At The Telegraph SWOV explains that a complete ban is difficult to enforce in practice, because a small amount of alcohol can quickly enter your blood in an innocent way (for example through fermentation after you have eaten). In theory, you can therefore run into the light during a check, while you have not been drinking. Logically, there will have to be a small margin, should there ever be a total ban.
