Italy tackles ‘cheating’ with fuel prices

The Italian government wants to combat ‘cheating’ with fuel prices in a fairly simple way. From now on, the average fuel prices must be visible at all filling stations.

In Italy, people think they have found a way to warn customers about abnormal fuel prices. From now on, petrol station owners must show what the national average fuel prices are at the filling station. This is provided by the Italian government. In this way, the price development should be more transparent for motorists. Not only can you see more easily whether a gas station is expensive or relatively cheap, but also whether any price increases have a basis or seem purely aimed at increasing the profit margin.

The latter often seemed to be the case (not only in Italy) with the huge increases in fuel prices last year and at the end of 2021. Here in the Netherlands, too, there were recently warnings that some filling station owners would raise prices somewhat in the run-up to the excise duty increase. In principle, filling station owners are free to go for a certain margin themselves, although this will be done more transparently in Italy from now on.

What do you think, should something like this also be introduced in the Netherlands?
