Spy shots BMW M5 Touring

For the first time in 16 years, the new BMW M5 will not only be available as a sedan, but also as a Touring. BMW is bringing back the M5 Touring and this set of spy photos shows that plug-in hybrid muscle for the first time in real life. And on the Nürburgring too!

As before, the Mercedes-AMG E 63 will soon be available again as a sedan and as an estate. Rival Audi RS6, in turn, is only available as an Avant. And the BMW M5? Since the introduction of the sixth-generation 5-series in 2010, it has only been available as a sedan. Indeed, the in 2007 during the Life Ccycle impulse introduced M5 Touring with mighty 5.0 V10 was the very last M5 Touring that BMW made. But not for long. In June, BMW announced the arrival of a brand new M5 Touring. These photos, shot on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, show the mighty station in action for the first time.

BMW has got the M Touring taste. For the first time in M3 history, it now supplies a real M3 Touring and the brand gives the gentlemen and ladies of its M department permission to turn the M5 of the new generation 5 series into a Touring in addition to a sedan. .

Plug-in hybrid kilo banger

The new BMW M5 Touring – just like the yet to be revealed sedan version – will have a plug-in hybrid powertrain. That is also a novelty in M5 land. It remains to be seen what exactly that powertrain will look like. The M5 of the previous generation 5-series was already 600 hp strong and the Competition and CS flavors went over that with successively 625 hp and 635 hp. The 475 hp plug-in hybrid powertrain of the XM 50e is clearly not potent enough. The simply called ‘XM’ variant of the BMW XM has a 635 hp plug-in hybrid powertrain and the plug-in hardware of the XM Label Red even brings 748 hp to the asphalt. Don’t be surprised if the latter powertrain also gets a spot in the M5. Indeed: much more power than the previous M5, but the battery pack and the electric motor also bring extra kilos.
