From Lynk & Co on the way to our own DNA

Zeekr, a brand from Geely’s Chinese stable, is ready to debut in the European market. Sweden and the Netherlands get the scoop for the X. Car designer Niels van Roij takes a closer look at the Chinese SUV.
Despite its compact exterior dimensions, Zeekr is Geely’s luxury brand, with a focus on modern society. What exactly is meant by this is difficult to explain, but it is clear that this electric crossover is equipped with an extremely original shape spectrum.
Stefan Sielaff waves the design scepter at Geely and Zeekr. This German car designer studied at the Royal College of Art in London and has spent most of his career at Audi. He also worked at Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Bentley. There is no shortage of experience, we can say.
And that can be seen. Proportionally, the X is pleasantly successful, with its long wheelbase paired with short front and rear overhangs. The lines and silhouette of this car are truly special and are very pleasing to the eye. We cannot say that about the tall, fragile-looking and forced Volkswagen ID family.
Details are just as interesting: stylish door windows, invisible integrated door handles, a rubberless glass line, rimless exterior mirrors and a hidden charging point. This not only results in an even purer appearance, but also in lower air resistance.
Zeekr X has a tasteful and well-kept interior, especially for an EV
The interior of the X has an inviting, soft and clean design. That has been completely forgotten in Volkswagen’s (and Seat’s) pursuit of cost reduction among segment peers ID3 and Born. This X is also many times more balanced, fresher, more original and therefore better designed than many other compact electric cars. The interior has a design of beautiful color combinations and materials that match the exterior colors perfectly. For example, there is a light lilac exterior, with a white-purple interior finish. As icing on the cake, rose gold elements are tastefully scattered throughout the interior, like little gems. The team designed this not only with great skill, but also with great pleasure.
It is clear that the design ideas come from sister brand Lynk & Co. Zeekr relies heavily on the graphical elements in particular down the road graphics. However, the aesthetic deviation of that brand is strong, because the interpretation is done according to its own interpretation. The further we look back in the design, the more the X takes on a face of its own.
For example, the sides have an interesting collaboration between graphic elements such as the side windows, or DLO, and the surfacing of the doors. Very well done!
Moreover, Sielaff has a bright idea for Zeekr’s future. Because although the design language for the first Zeekr models is currently somewhat borrowed from Lynk & Co, it will eventually grow into its own DNA, specifically for this brand. Based in Sweden, the Zeekr design team is working to develop a luxury design language for the brand, reserved for one of the highest segments of the market.
If the quality of the current design work says anything about Zeekr’s future, it can only become a resounding success.
