Differences in size

The showpieces of 2022 were the iPhone 14 devices. There was no longer a mini, but an iPhone 14 Plus: a larger version of the entry-level model. It had a 6.7-inch screen instead of a 6.1-inch screen, just like the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max.

As soon as a device is larger, there is also more space for the battery. Apple certainly took advantage of this, because with the iPhone 14 Plus you can watch your favorite films and series for about 6 hours longer. The same applies to the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which has approximately the same battery capacity, but thanks to a more energy-efficient chip, it handles that capacity even better.

Improved chip under the hood

Every year, Apple also released a new chip with new iPhones. With the iPhone 14 series, the manufacturer decided to take a different approach. The iPhone 14 (Plus) still has to make do with the ‘old’ A15 Bionic chip, which was also used in the iPhone 13 Pro (Max). Fortunately, Apple has taken a second look at this and has given it an update.

The new Dynamic Island

The Dynamic Island was new. That finally replaced the large notch on the iPhone 14 Pro (Max). The new oval bar is context sensitive: depending on what you do with your iPhone, this ‘island’ changes appearance.

If someone calls you, you will see it appear here. Did you turn on a timer while cooking? Then it counts down here. A background activity, such as playing music, is also shown here. It’s interactive, so you can control your music without leaving the app you have open.

Camera upgrade of the year

It was already incredibly powerful in the iPhone 13 Pro (Max), but according to Apple, the new A15 chip is 18 percent faster than the old version. The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max did receive a brand new processor: the A16 Bionic. It is of course a bit more powerful and more energy efficient than its predecessor.

Like every year, the camera was also upgraded. Apple has mainly focused on the iPhone 14 Pro (Max), because it allows you to take snapshots with a resolution of 48 megapixels for the first time. Older devices – including the iPhone 14 (Plus) – take photos with 12 megapixel lenses.

Through pixel binning, those 48 pixels are combined into 12 megapixels. The result is a photo with more details and colors that better match reality. The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus camera did not receive such a major upgrade, but it does take better snapshots in low light than its predecessor.
