Climate activists block A12 for eighth day in a row

Several hundred climate activists blocked the A12 highway in The Hague on Saturday for the eighth day in a row. This is done in protest against government regulations that support the fossil industry.

The blockade started around noon, when hundreds of demonstrators walked onto the A12 and stopped traffic. The activists sit on the road, with their arms linked together. Police are calling on Extinction Rebellion supporters to leave the highway or they will be arrested, as has happened in previous blockades.

The municipality of The Hague also reports that the demonstration on the Utrechtsebaan, as that part of the highway is called, is not allowed. “You can demonstrate on the Avenue of Reagan and Gorbachev,” the municipality said on X, formerly Twitter.

On Friday it was announced that more subsidies and tax benefits will go to the fossil sector than was thought. According to a calculation by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate, this amounts to between 39.7 billion and 46.4 billion euros annually.
