Things stabilize

Bovag and RAI Association expect that almost as many new passenger cars will be registered next year as this year. According to the trade organizations, this indicates that the car market will stabilize next year.
Initially, Bovag and RAI Association aimed for a total of around 340,000 new passenger cars to be registered in 2023. After the first nine months of this year, the registration counter stands at 286,781 units. The expected final figure for this year has now been adjusted upwards to 357,000 new passenger cars. For next year, the trade organizations are aiming for a comparable number of new passenger cars to receive a license plate.
Bovag and RAI Association expect that 360,000 new passenger cars will be registered next year, negligibly more than this year. This year, a significant part of the registrations consisted of backorders from orders placed in 2022. The conclusion is that the fact that the trade organizations expect that we will have a comparable number of new passenger cars in 2024 as this year indicates that supply problems are hardly an issue anymore and that the market is stabilizing.
Almost 360,000 is a large number, but in the big picture that is still not as many as before the corona crisis. For example, 455,217 new passenger cars were registered in the Netherlands in 2019. In 2020, this dropped to 355,431 units and an even greater low was reached in 2021. At that time, 263,588 new passenger cars were registered, the lowest number since 1967. In 2022, the registration counter ended at more than 312,000 units. The Tesla Model Y is well on its way to becoming the most popular car of 2023.
