OnePlus is known for its smartphones, earbuds and smartwatches. Now OnePlus has introduced its first foldable phone with the OnePlus Open; foldable phones (foldables) we come across more and more often, for example the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. According to the company, the OnePlus Open is designed according to the brand’s philosophy: industrial minimalism in combination with elegance.
Design
When this foldable OnePlus Open is opened, the phone has these dimensions: 153.4 mm high, 143.1 mm wide and 5.8 mm thick. Since the ‘inside’ has two screens next to each other and is therefore one large screen, you have a nice large screen. When closed, the phone is 153.4 mm high, 73.3 mm wide and 11.7 mm thick. The phone weighs 245 grams and is only available in Emerald Dusk color. The device has a frosted glass back. Microscopic beads should provide a surface with a blend of light and shadow from different angles. In addition, the device has a vacuum that separates the camera sensors and glass dome on the outside.
OnePlus Open’s alert slider has also been redesigned to fit the 5.8mm foldable housing. The size of the slider has been increased and placed in the middle of the device.
Screens
The OnePlus Open is equipped with two 2K fluid amoled ProXDR screens, each with a refresh rate of 120Hz. This means that the screen on the front is not only of excellent quality, but the Open also has a main screen that opens up into a real Pro tablet. The main screen is 7.82 inches. The main screen has a screen-to-body ratio of 89.6% and is of the same high quality as the front screen. The main screen is also reinforced by three layers of protection. For example, the screen has ultra-thin glass on top of the flexi OLED, a TPU layer that provides protection against physical shocks and an anti-reflective screen protector that prevents daily wear and tear.
The screen on the front has a size of 6.31 inches and an aspect ratio of 20:09. In addition to a peak brightness of 2800 nits, the front screen also features a high brightness mode of up to 1400 nits. The screen also has Ceramic Guard protection. This means that the ionized ceramic crystals ensure that the screen is 20 percent more shock resistant than Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.
Processor, memory and connections
The OnePlus Open features the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform, over 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM accelerated by OnePlus’ own RAM-Vita software, and 512 GB of storage. Furthermore, the Open also supports Wi-Fi 7.
Cameras
The OnePlus Open has a set of three main cameras. The primary camera is equipped with the Sony LYTIA-T808 sensor and has pixel stacked and Optical Image Stabilization technology. With the LYT-T808 sensor, the OnePlus Open is the first foldable phone equipped with a sensor from Sony’s new line of innovative image sensors. The sensor has a size of 1/1.43 inch and a pixel size of 1.12μm. The ‘Pixel Stacked’ technology is also known as ‘Dual-Layer Transistor Pixel’. This technology has a redesigned pixel architecture that should improve light intake and storage. Instead of placing pixels on the same plane (side by side), the ‘Dual-Layer Transistor Pixel’ architecture separates and stacks two layers beneath the photodiodes. This ensures bright, clear images with less overexposure.
In addition, the set also consists of a 64MP telephoto camera with 6x in-sensor lossless zoom including OIS. In addition to 3X optical and 6X in-sensor lossless zoom, this camera also has 120X Ultra Res Zoom. Thanks to the periscopic zoom construction and the so-called ‘D-cut’ on the outside of the lens, the sensor fits perfectly in a device as thin as the Open. This means that 23 percent more light falls on the sensor. At 1/2 inch, this is the largest sensor of a telephoto lens in a foldable phone. This ensures users of high-quality image performance even in low light. The OnePlus Open also has an ultra-wide-angle 48MP camera with AutoFocus.
In addition to the cameras on the back, the phone also has two selfie cameras: a 20MP sensor on the main screen and a 32MP camera on the front screen.
Finally, OnePlus has teamed up with Hasselblad to offer Open users an improved portrait mode. The Open’s cameras work particularly well in low light. The cameras work together to deliver DSLR-level depth tracking, bokeh and flare effects that the Hasselblad cameras capture with XCD 3.5/30, 2.8/65 and 2.5/90V lenses.
Open Canvas
Open Canvas is in the new OxygenOS 13.2 operating system to improve daily productivity and efficiency on a large screen. About 95 percent of mainstream apps are compatible with larger screens without any weird visual adjustments or resizing.
Open Canvas introduces a desktop-like taskbar at the bottom of the enlarged main screen. This makes recent and preset applications easy to use. The OnePlus Open’s taskbar features a brand new folder called ‘Recents’, which provides near-instant access to recent photos, saved images, edited documents and more. Users are even able to move them within the folder by simply dragging them elsewhere, such as to compatible applications such as Gmail, OneNote, Google Message, Microsoft Teams and WhatsApp for instant sharing.
With Open Canvas, multi-window or split screen use is no longer limited to the physical size of the screen. It gives users the ability to stretch and resize active windows as desired. Secondary windows can slide in and out of the physical screen on demand, making switching between certain apps easy. It is possible to display up to four app windows on the screen at the same time. In addition, up to nine multi-app presets can be saved for instant access.
Battery
The OnePlus Open features a large 4805mAh battery and 67W SUPERVOOC charger that charges the OnePlus Open’s battery (from 1-100%) in approximately 42 minutes.
