Possibly more layoffs than expected at VDL Nedcar

It appears that slightly more jobs will disappear at VDL Nedcar than initially thought. That message 1Limburg. This would involve about 200 to 300 more jobs than was announced this summer.

At VDL Nedcar it was announced at the beginning of the summer that a large part of the almost 4,000 employees will lose their jobs because BMW will no longer have cars built in Born as of March 1, 2024. Initially it was thought that around 500 to 600 employees would be able to keep their jobs with other activities. Sources in and around the company, which according to 1Limburg wish to remain anonymous, state that there are only about 300 to 400.

VDL Nedcar itself does not want to comment on this, according to the medium, but ‘it seems that clarity will come soon’. In addition to the approximately 170 Nedcar employees who left voluntarily, this has now also come to an end for the first group who remained. This concerns 350 permanent employees and a thousand temporary workers. It is expected that it will soon become clear how large the group is that will be on the streets as of March 1 next year.

There was not only bad news for the company last summer, because a new production deal was also close to being signed. It is still not entirely clear which deal or deals may be on the table. VDL was previously in discussions with the German company ElectricBrands, which wants to have the electric city car Evetta and the modular Xbus produced in Born. Gordon Murray Automotive is also said to be interested and we recently heard about a possible deal with Schaeffler for the production of an autonomous taxi.
