The model was already leaked a few months ago, but now Suzuki has officially lifted the curtain on its first crossover model: the GSX-S1000GX. In a nutshell: a GSX-S1000GT, but with longer suspension travel and a more adventurous design. And more advanced features, including semi-active suspension.
The new Suzuki GSX-S1000GX is Suzuki’s vision of what a luxury crossover should offer: top performance, maximum comfort and an aggressive-looking supersport design. In this role the machine occupies a unique place in Suzuki’s line-up, as it falls squarely between sport tourers and adventure tourers.
According to Suzuki, the GX combines the best elements of the GSX-S1000GT and V-STROM 1050 and offers a unique seating position. It is the ultimate sporty motorcycle that allows the rider to go in any direction, whether that means an exciting ride on a mountain road or comfortably covering long distances.
The new GX is designed according to the ‘Unbridled Elegance’ design concept. Sharp lines, but also attention to the smallest details, are central. The sharp front not only houses the characteristic GSX-S LED light unit, but also LED position lights in a V-shape along the headlight unit.
Suzuki says that aerodynamics played an important role in the GX, down to the smallest details it was developed in the wind tunnel. This approach resulted, among other things, in a unique wind screen that provides the necessary wind protection. The windshield can be adjusted in three steps, increasing or decreasing the height by 43 mm. The handguards and panels have also been aerodynamically optimized to ensure minimal drag and maximum protection in challenging weather conditions.
The differences compared to the GSX-S1000GT are large. The GX, for example, has greater suspension travel (150mm front and rear) which provides more ground clearance, as well as a more upright seating position, which Suzuki says it has done extensive research into.
Compared to the GT, Suzuki has placed the handlebars 55 mm closer to the rider, so you sit more upright. The new handlebar is 50mm wider and measures 877mm. The increased ground clearance and new saddle design also increase the distance between the rider’s hip point and the foot point by 15 mm. This results in a more natural position of the knees.
Compared to the GT, the saddle is 15 mm thicker for the rider and 10 mm thicker for the passenger. The lightweight aluminum luggage rack with integrated handles gives the passenger a firm hold. The footrests for the passenger and rider are also equipped with rubber grips.
The electronics package of the Suzuki GSX-S1000GX, the Suzuki Intelligent Ride System, is the basis for the sharp driving characteristics and abundance of comfort. This advanced electronics package consists of various sensors and a 6-axis Inertial Measure Unit (IMU) that controls quite a few driver assistance systems.
Take a seat: Suzuki Drive Mode Selector Alpha (SDMS-α), Power Mode Selector, Suzuki Traction Control System (STCS), Smart TLR (Traction, Lift, Roll and Torque) Control, Active Damping Control (ADC), Suzuki Advanced Electronic Suspension (SAES), Suzuki Floating Ride Control (SFRC).
Let’s continue: Suzuki Velocity Dependent Control (SVDC), Suzuki Deceleration Damping Control (SDDC), Uzuki Road Adaptive Stabilization (SRAS), Automatic Rear Suspension Mode, Ride-by-wire Electronic Throttle System, i-directional Quick Shift System , Smart Cruise Control, Motion Track Brake System, Slope Dependent Control System, Suzuki Easy Start System and finally Low RPM Assist.
Suzuki Drive Mode Selector Alpha is a feature that was previously only reserved for the iconic Hayabusa, but is now also available on the GX. SDMS-α offers various advanced riding modes through electronic assistance systems where riders can also choose individual settings. Use the Power Mode Selector and choose an appropriate throttle response during acceleration; ‘Active’, ‘Basic’ or ‘Comfort’, with always the maximum power level.
Linked to the riding modes is Suzuki’s Smart TLR (Traction, Lift, Roll and Torque) Control system, which combines three systems for optimal traction. Suzuki Traction Control System (STCS) with 7 positions, a Lift Limiter and Roll and Torque Control (a Suzuki first) ensures the correct power delivery while cornering.
In addition to the adjustable throttle response and traction control, SDMS-α also contains the new Active Damping Control (ADC) for optimal damping. This system offers four electronically controlled damping modes: ‘Hard’, ‘Medium’, ‘Soft’ and the customizable ‘User’ setting.
In ‘User’ mode, the rider chooses one of the three settings as a basis, where you adjust the settings for the front and rear damping independently in ± 3 steps. By default, the Active Damping modes are linked to the Power modes, for example Power Mode A with Active Damping Modes ‘Hard’. You can choose to set links between the Power modes and ADC modes according to your needs or preferences.
The Suzuki GSX-S1000GX has a 6.5-inch TFT color display. The display itself has a scratch-resistant top layer and an anti-reflection layer so that the display remains easy to read even in a lot of sunlight. The multimedia system also supports SUZUKI mySPIN. This allows the rider to project phone contents, contacts, calendar, music and map apps onto the GX’s large TFT color screen.
The new Suzuki GSX-S1000GX, like every other Suzuki motorcycle, comes with a 6-year warranty. Suzuki will announce more about prices and availability at a later date.
