One in twenty cars drives on dangerous tires

How often do you check the condition of your tires?

Few things are as important as decent rubber under your car. Yet hundreds of thousands of cars in the Netherlands probably have dangerous skids. This is evident from research by Vaco, the trade association for the tire and wheel industry.

Research conducted among 1,501 passenger cars shows that about 5 percent have at least one tire that should be replaced immediately. If you apply that percentage to the total Dutch vehicle fleet, it would mean that almost half a million cars in the Netherlands drive on at least one dangerous tire.

According to Vaco, of the one in twenty passenger cars with at least one tire in need of replacement, more than half had a tire that would make a driver legally in violation. Also striking: almost 4 percent of the cars examined had one or more tires with visible damage. Consider a deformed cheek or incisions. 12 percent of the car tires that Vaco saw during the investigation were older than ten years.

According to Vaco director Carlo Hijzen, there is a danger in the increasingly longer maintenance intervals for cars. “30,000 kilometers is no longer an exception. This especially applies to electric cars. The danger is that a car drives tens of thousands of kilometers without a professional looking at it. As a driver you have no idea to what extent your tires have worn out or been damaged in the meantime,” says Hijzen. According to him, it is also a factor that tires that barely pass the MOT soon no longer meet the requirements. According to Hijzen, a lot can change in the condition of the tire between the MOTs.
