Why that Dacia in particular? Together with Luc, Damiaan discusses the past car year on board the Dacia Sandero.
In this first look back at 2023, Damiaan Hage and Luc Vranken sit together in a Dacia Sandero. Why that Dacia in particular? Wouldn’t you say that the editor-in-chief just has to snap his fingers to drive whatever he wants?
Damien’s car heart rate rose regularly this year: a few laps of the circuit with the BMW M3 Touring, Porsche 911 GT3 RS or Lamborghini Sterrato. “You can always wake me up for that. But a super sports car as the highlight of the year is a bit easy for me. After all, those cars are specially designed to give the drivers a moment of fun, so it’s a bit surprising that they are fun. Power , acceleration, top speed: all impressive numbers, really cool. But this inflation-ridden year has a completely different winner, and that is the Dacia Sandero. With the most important numbers: the consumer price and the sales numbers. When you consider that the average new car €46,000 and we all pay €25,000 for an average used car, then it is a top achievement that this car can be purchased in the Netherlands for €17,000.
Dacia has made keeping the price low a top sport, without compromising quality. The manufacturer builds almost all models with the same technology and limits the options to a minimum. It has what you need, and everything else you don’t and you can’t get. So no ‘ambiance lighting’ in 16 colours, no cameras all around, no seat massage: those kinds of options make cars expensive to manufacture. So hats off. It is not without reason that the Sandero is in the top 3 of best-selling cars in Europe. Many people need affordable transportation more than a head-up display or 200 hp.”
