The number of passenger cars in the Netherlands has increased ‘remarkably’

The number of passenger cars in the Netherlands has increased considerably in the past year. The Bovag even speaks of a ‘remarkable’ increase.

More than 180,000 passenger cars were added to the Netherlands last year. As a result, the counter now stands at 9.4 million passenger cars in total in our country. A spokesperson for the automotive industry organization Bovag confirmed this after reporting from it A.D. De Bovag calls the increase ‘remarkable’, but cannot yet say exactly what causes it. In previous years, around 100,000 cars were added per year. In 2015, there were still 8.2 million cars on Dutch roads.

Nearly 370,000 new cars were sold last year, significantly more than the year before. This is mainly due to a catch-up of postponed deliveries in 2022, the Bovag and the Rai Association said earlier. Also, 254,000 cars were imported, compared to almost 280,000 exported cars. In addition, according to the AD, 164,000 cars were scrapped.

This year, the Bovag and Rai Association expect that 360,000 new cars will be registered. That is more than the forecast for 340,000 new cars sold last year, which was more than achieved. According to the organizations, it is still uncertain what influence subsidies, for example, have on the demand and purchase of electric cars by private and business buyers. Last year, almost a third of the total registrations were electric.
