Mazda CX-80 patent

Mazda is expanding its European and Dutch line-up this year with the CX-80. The Mazda CX-80 will be the big brother of the CX-60, an SUV that offers space for at least seven occupants thanks to an extra row of seats. AutoWeek can already show you the CX-80 from all angles.

A few years ago, Mazda announced four new SUVs: the CX-60 and CX-80 and the CX-70 and CX-90. The first two are intended for the European and therefore also the Dutch market, the CX-70 and CX-90 are mainly intended for the American market and have already been unveiled. The Mazda CX-60 has also been driving around our region for a while. That five-seater will soon be joined by the CX-70. AutoWeek can now show you the CX-70 on patent images from all angles.

The Mazda CX-60.

The Mazda CX-80 relates to the CX-60 in the same way as the CX-90 relates to the CX-70. This means that – to put it bluntly – it is an extended variant of the CX-60, complete with an extra row of seats and therefore the option to take extra passengers. ‘But, isn’t this just a CX-70 or CX-90?’. No. Although the SUV shows broad similarities with its three sister models in these drawings retrieved from the Japanese patent office, it is really different. Compared to the CX-60 already known here, the longer CX-80 has a longer third side window. Not only that: the D-pillar is also completely different from that of the CX-60. The way it is done is similar to how it is done with the American CX-70 and CX-90, although it is completely different. Just look at its framing.

The Mazda CX-80 in these photos has a hatch on both the left and right sides above the rear wheels. That is of course not easy. In any case, the CX-80 will be available in the Netherlands with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The plug version is therefore the variant that we have here in the patent image. At the front, the CX-80 looks – not entirely surprisingly – like the CX-60 as two peas in a pod. In the Netherlands, the plug-in hybrid CX-60 has a 327 hp plug-in hybrid drivetrain, a piece of hardware that consists of a 192 hp and 261 Nm strong 2.5 four-cylinder and a 136 hp electric motor. The CX-60 has a 17.8 kWh battery, good for an electric range of 63 kilometers. The CX-80 will undoubtedly not get as far with the same equipment using only electric power.
